Frequently Asked Questions
Tell me more about your therapeutic modalitites?
I’m strongly person-centred, which takes you as the person who knows the most about yourself and therefore as much as possible helping you find answers for yourself. However, as someone with training and knowledge that can be useful to you, I will share that knowledge and insight when helpful and appropriate. I like to recieve feedback and usually in the second or third session (if you’d like) i have a short questionnaire i can ask to see what your therapeutic preferences are. I try to check in as much as possible to seek feedback, and if at any point something isnt working or landing right i hope you might tell me. Other modalities are CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), which really works with your thoughts, as our thoughts about reality directly impact our emotions more so than what is actually happening. Therefore, sometimes learning to challenge our thoughts and rewrite habitual ones can be very helpful. This is often accompanied by mindfulness and other nervous system regulation strategies. I’m very interest in working with the body when appropriate also, as sometimes connecting with the body helps us to access and work through things the mind struggles with. So what this might look like in practice is noticing the sensations in your body, which can sound a bit strange if you’re unfamiliar with it, but can be very helpful. I also might incorporate IFS (internal family systems) which is often referred to as parts work. This stems from the idea that we have different personalities living within us, or different parts that are all formed based on past life experiences (often stemming from childhood). IFS looks at connecting with the different parts and taking care of their needs so they don’t lash out and run our life unconsciously.
Tell me more about walk and talk therapy?
Walk and talk therapy will take a place at an agreed upon location decided beforehand by both client and therapist, but will usually be at a beach or wood walk in the Bandon, Clonakilty, Kinsale region. Sessions are 50-60 minutes long, and you can set the pace or speed of walking, and are welcome to stop or pause whenever you want. Sessions run similarly to online therapy, and you can decide the topics you wish to explore. There are extra elements to consider such as other people walking, so together we will discuss how to maintain confidentiality in this situation. Examples might include walking in less frequented areas or pausing the conversation to let other people pass. This will all be agreed upon by phone, email, text, or video call before the first session.
How long will it take to hear back from you?
I usually respond to emails, texts, and phone calls within 48hrs. If you haven’t heard back from me within this time frame please feel free to contact me again.
How are you neurodivergent-affirming?
As someone who is autistic and ADHD the area of neurodiversity is somewhat a special interest for me and I have done lots of training and reading in this area. At the core it’s about understanding neurodivergent needs and validating them instead of gaslighting and making you conform to neurotypical norms. In sessions this might look like giving you different options for communication such as typing when you want/need or having your camera off when working online. Or if you’d like to take a pause in the middle of the session, or move around that is also welcome. There’s no obligation to maintain eye contact or look in the screen, and fidget toys are welcome. If there’s something you need that I have not mentioned please do not hesitate to ask, or simply go ahead and do whatever you need to do to better take care of you. And if anything is ever unclear I invite you to please ask questions, and will check-in also to make sure we are both understanding each other.
I'm not sure if I'm neurodivergent, can I still seek neurodivergent-affirming therapy?
Yes, whether you’re neurodivergent, exploring the possibility of being neurodivergent, or not neurodivergent you’re welcome here. A neurodivergent-affirming space will simply validate you and your needs, whomever you are.
Do you work with LGBT+ folk?
Yes, as a member of the LGBT+ community I welcome people of all genders and sexuality’s in my psychotherapy and coaching practice.
I'm nervous about starting therapy, can you tell me about what to expect?
In the initial introduction call we’ll start by getting to know each other. I’ll tell you a little bit about my background and my approaches, and then you can share a little bit about yourself and/or what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. If you’re unsure, that’s a valid answer too. You’re welcome to lead this part or I can ask you questions to help you figure things out. There is also time for you to ask me any questions you might have. At the end of the intro call I’ll check-in and see if you’d like to work together or if you’d like more time to think about it. If we decide we’d like to work together we can either book the appointment then, by email/phone, or you can book directly into my calendar through a link I will send you. I’ll send you a therapy contract for you to sign digitally and there will be time to ask any questions at the beginning of our next session.
The first session can then either explore you’re background or history or go straight into talking about any topic or area you wish – it’s up to you. In each session it will be up to you to bring something you’d like to talk about. This could be a difficult emotional experience, a relationship, something you’re trying to understand or figure out, and any thoughts, feelings, or behaviours you’d like to explore, process, understand, or just feel. All of you is welcome.
There is no pressure for you to share anymore than you are comfortable with and you’re welcome to pause sessions if you need a break to process, or communicate through the chat box if that’s easier (for online sessions).
I'm nervous about starting coaching, can you tell me about what to expect?
The intro call for coaching is similar to therapy. After this you’ll recieve a coaching welcome packet, highlighting what to expect, terms and conditions, and also where you’ll highlight your goals and what you hope to get from coaching. In each session it will be up to you to bring 1-2 goals or areas you’d like to focus on. The session will then either take an educational format or be an opportunity for you to explore and understand what’s happening and what you need in this area. After this you will receive a follow up email that might include a session summary, and exercises to help either implement what you’ve learned in session or to explore the area further.
I'm afraid of being too much
All of you is welcome in therapy. You are welcome to swear, cry, ramble, go off on tangents, be silent, move. Whatever you need to do to express yourself and also support yourself you. All of you is welcome and there is no wrong way of being in therapy.
What's the difference between coaching and psychotherapy?
While there is some overlap between the two, coaching is more solution focused and psychotherapy is deeper work of going into the past, discovering unconscious patterns, healing trauma, etc. Psychotherapy can also focus on the present too, but generally the work is deeper. Meanwhile coaching looks more at the present, what you can do now to create the change you seek, and includes alot more education and learning, and homework, exercises, and support in between each session.
How often do I need to book sessions?
This is entirely up to you, it might be weekly, biweekly, or once a month. Some people prefer frequent sessions just to help them stay focused and help with the continuity of the work. Whereas other people need a little more time to process, or just have less time available. So it’s up to you to decide, but of course I can help you figure it out if you’re unsure.
What's your payment system?
Payment can be made through paypal, revolut, bank transfer, or through a card payment link hosted by Stripe.
What if I change my mind and want to stop working with you?
I know it can feel a little awkward telling someone you no longer want to work with them, yet this is something that will happen eventually sooner or later. Maybe you decide it’s no longer a good fit, or your circumstances have changed, or simply you’ve done all the work you want to do for now. When this happens please email/text/phone or let me know in session. There’s no need to over-explain yourself (unless you want to, in which case please do). But just let me know, and we can finish up. b
