Why Counselling & Psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy provide a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space, for you to explore what’s really going on for you so you can find the answers, understanding, and support you need. Psychotherapy is different for everyone, and it’s different at different stages of our lives. Whether you just need someone to talk to, help making sense of your thoughts and feelings, heal trauma, manage stress and anxiety, or get out of dark place – therapy helps.

If you’re struggling with your mental or emotional wellbeing (no matter how big or small) – then you’re in the right place. Because sometimes it’s really hard to see clearly and understand what’s really going on when we’re alone with our thoughts inside our head. Having a compassionate space where we can speak our thoughts out loud, helps us make sense of them, and eventually heal and grow. Not to mention, learning coping tools and strategies and learning about how the brain, body, emotions, and nervous system work – are all helpful lifeskills.

Therapeutic Approach

My approach to counselling and psychotherapy is rooted in empathy, understanding, and collaboration. It is designed to help you navigate life’s challenges, foster personal growth, and build resilience. Together we will explore your options and decide what therapeutic approach works best for you and review this regularly. And if you’re unsure of what your preferred approach is, then I will take the lead and employ a therapeutic approach scientifically proven to be effective for what you’re coming to therapy with.

Theories I use include Person Centered, CBT, IFS, Choice Theory, Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness, Existential, Solution Focused, & Motivational Interviewing. I’m also a certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP), and constantly learning more and regularly attend workshops and trainings to continue developing my therapeutic skills. Read the FAQ section to learn more about the different therapeutic approaches.

If this is your first time seeking counselling or psychotherapy, then I applaud you for the courage it takes in even taking the first step and reaching out, and I promise I’ll be here to hold your hand and guide you along the way.

Neurodivergent Affirming

Everyone struggles sometimes. Yet for neurodivergent folk there is the added pressure of being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world. Where we often recieve the message that there is something wrong with us, or we just need to try extra hard to keep up with neurotypical standards.

For neurodivergent folk, therapy can provide understanding and validation, help with challenges such as sensory overload or executive functioning differences, and offer strategies tailored to your unique body, brain and strengths. It’s a space where you are invited to unmask as much as you are comfortable with so you can be fully yourself. I also provide tailored support for challenges such as sensory overwhelm, masking, burnout, emotional regulation, navigating relationships, and processing a late-diagnosis. Together, we’ll explore strategies that honor your individuality and help you thrive in a world not always designed with neurodiversity in mind.

There are fidget toys available for in-person sessions, and I will check-in on the sensory elements of the environment to help support your needs, and of course you are free to move freely throughout the session. I also incorporate specific adaptations to therapeutic approaches to suit individual needs and provide a space to regularly receive feedback from you.

Whether you have a formal diagnosis, self-identify, or are just starting to explore the possibility of neurodiversity, I endeavor to create a safe space for you and your needs.

What to expect in your first session

Your first session is all about getting to know each other and creating a space where you feel safe, supported, and heard. You can share as much or as little as you’d like – there’s no pressure.

I’ll go over the therapeutic contract and ask some questions to get to know more about your life, experiences, and what’s important to you. This helps me understand how I can best support you. This is a collaborative process, so you’re welcome to guide the conversation and share only what feels comfortable. And if you’re unsure I’ll guide you as needed. We’ll work together to set goals that feel meaningful and achievable for you, and if you’re unsure of your goals we can figure them out together as we go along.

We’ll also discuss what kind of support works best for you. If you’re neurodivergent, for example, we can explore strategies tailored to your needs, such as sensory-friendly tools, a structured session format, etc.

The session will last about 50 minutes. Everything you share is confidential, and we’ll go over any questions you might have about the therapy process. At the end, we’ll decide on the next steps together.

I know starting therapy can feel a bit intimidating, but my goal is to make the experience as comfortable and supportive as possible. This is your space, and we’ll always move at a pace that feels right for you. Feel free to contact me with any questions you have beforehand by email or phone call/text.
